A Window Into Our Writer in Residence Programme

Scenes from the first creativity workshop, held as part of the CaribLit Writer in Residence programme at St. George's University (SGU), Grenada. The workshop was held on Saturday, March 1. Participants included members of the Grenadian public, SGU faculty and staff. 

The workshop focussed on prose writing and at the end of the workshop, participants shared what they had created. Some of the participants also took part in the writing intensive and in the poetry workshop, held as part of the Writer In Residence programme.

Jamaica Poetry Festival set for August 10, 2014

Edutainment Promotion presents the Jamaica Poetry Festival, the International Edition, "The Year of Poetree" on Sunday August 10, 2014, at the Louise Bennett Garden Theatre, Hope Road, Kingston.

Workshops will be between 10am and 2pm and the show begins at 7pm.

2014 Wasafiri New Writing Prize is open for entries

The Wasafiri New Writing Prize is now open.


Wasafiri is Britain’s premier magazine for international contemporary writing. The quarterly publication is known for promoting work by new and established voices across the globe and has been a long supporter of Caribbean writers.

The New Writing Prize is.open to anyone worldwide who has not published a complete book. Submissions will be accepted in three categories: Poetry, Fiction and Life Writing. £300 will be awarded to the winner in each category and their work will be published in Wasafiri.

The closing date is 5pm GMT on 25 July 2014.

Announcing the Alice Yard Prize for Art Writing

We are very pleased to announce the establishment of the Alice Yard Prize for Art Writing, an annual award for an original piece of critical writing on contemporary Caribbean art by a Caribbean writer aged 35 or under.Conceived and administered by the co-directors of Alice Yard, the prize aims to encourage new writing on Caribbean art and artists, and to identify emerging voices in contemporary Caribbean art criticism.

The winner of the prize will receive a cash award of US$1,000 and publication in The Caribbean Review of Books. The inaugural Alice Yard Prize for Art Writing opens for entries on 16 May 2014, with a deadline of 14 July. The winner will be announced in September 2014 to commemorate Alice Yard’s eighth anniversary.

To be eligible to enter for the 2014 prize, a writer must be a citizen of the Caribbean, whether resident in the region or abroad, and be under the age of 35 on the entry deadline, 14 July, 2014. 

A piece of writing entered for the prize does not have to be a conventional critical essay or review. The prize administrators are interested in writing that investigates different forms and genres, as long as it is driven by genuine critical engagement.

Alice Yard is a contemporary art space and network based in the backyard of the house at 80 Roberts Street, Woodbrook, Port of Spain. Since September 2006, Alice Yard has curated and hosted a programme of artists' projects and residencies, performances, exhibitions, readings, discussions, screenings, and other “conversations”, bringing artists, musicians, writers, and audiences together for informal interaction.

Jamaican Author A-dZiko Gegele Wins Burt Award for Caribbean Literature First Prize

CODE is proud to announce the winners of its inagural Burt Award for Caribbean Literature.

A-dZiko Gegele received the first prize of $10,000 CAD for All Over Again (published by Blouse and Skirts Books), Joanne Hillhouse, from Antigua and Barbuda, won the second prize of $7,000 CAD for her soon to be published manuscript Musical Youth, while the third prize of $5,000 CAD went to Colleen Smith-Dennis of Jamaica for Inner City Girl (published by LMH Publishing.) The finalists were selected by a jury administered by The Bocas Lit Fest and made up of writers, literacy experts and academics from the Caribbean and Canada.
The Award’s book purchase and distribution program will ensure that a minimum of 2,500 copies of each of the three winning titles will be put into the hands of young people through schools, libraries and community organizations across the Caribbean. Winning publishers also commit to actively market an additional minimum of 1,200 copies of each winning title throughout the region.
